Crackdown on Drug Driving

On the 2nd March 2015 a change to the law made it easier for police to convict drivers under the influence of drugs. Beforehand the police had to show that a suspected driver’s performance was impaired by the drug; however now the police only need to prove that a small amount is in the driver’s system to convict them.

Normally to be able to prove this the police in most cases would need the support of an ambulance with the facilities to carry out the test roadside. Obviously this was an inefficient use of resources so the government is proposing an investment of £750,000 to the UK police force so that they have the equipment in car to be able to carry out these tests.

It is important to note that the change in law that came into effect in March 2015 covers not only illegal drugs but also many prescription drugs as well. The bottom line: if the substance affects your driving ability then don’t get behind the wheel.
