Female drivers have always been considered safer on the road and they used to pay up to 50% less for car insurance compared to their male peers.
But at Call Wiser, we are pleased to offer other ways to obtain competitive car insurance quotes for women. On 21 December 2012, an official EU ruling was put into place to remove discrimination between genders for the pricing of all insurance policies.
The Guardian explains how women under the age of 40 were affected the most by the new reform because they now have to pay similar rates as their male counterparts who are considered a higher risk to insure.
Men account for 92% of all driving convictions and 98% of convictions for dangerous driving, so it is no wonder that historically women have paid less for their insurance.
According to the AA, it is only around the time that men reach the age of 40 are they considered a much lower risk to insure and their premiums start to become similar to those of women, at around £700-£750 per year.
But just because there is a new ruling in place doesn’t mean that car insurance for ladies needs to be more expensive and they can’t get a great deal. Insurance premiums are designed to reflect the risk of the driver so if a motorist is truly a safer driver, there is no reason why they can’t get a competitive rate, male or female.
At Call Wiser, we believe that we can help you find the best female car insurance by speaking to you over the phone to understand exactly what you need. You will speak to a certified insurance agent who will ask about your driving habits and your vehicle and we will give you a quote there and then.
By working with a number of specialist insurers, we are able to compare several policies at once and find a plan that is tailored to your needs. We are always looking for new partners and get new deals regularly so that we can provide the best possible options for our customers.
Whilst young female drivers are affected the most by the EU ruling, by completing the Pass Plus Scheme, they will receive an extra driving qualification which is recognised by UK insurers – and this can save 30%-40% on your insurance policy.
Also if you are aged over 25 and have been driving for at least 5 years without making a claim, you may be eligible for a no claims bonus which can reduce your premium by up to 80%.
Insurers will always take your occupation into consideration because there are different risks associated with each profession. For instance, someone that commutes into work in a heavily built up area with lots of traffic will be at greater risk of being involved in an accident or having their car stolen compared to someone that works locally or not at all. Insurance companies will always consider your annual mileage and the purpose of your vehicle and if you only use it for social and domestic use, your premium will be less.
The size of your vehicle will also determine how risky you are to insure. Typically the bigger the engine, the more expensive you are to insure. So regardless of whether you are male or female, your policy will depend on the size of the car you drive and where it features on the car insurance group rating.
Lady drivers can still pay less for their insurance by adding adequate security features to their vehicle and reduce the risk of it being broken into or stolen. Consider locking your car in a garage overnight or simply putting a plastic cover over the vehicle. There is also a list of insurer-approved security devices you can add which will reduce the price of your policy e.g immobiliser.
Other than recording your number of crashes or claims, there is a way to monitor how safely you drive and this can be very beneficial to women. Using a little black box device that is installed on your dashboard, it uses telematics technology to monitor your braking, speed, acceleration, steering and times of day that you drive.
The information is fed in real-time to your insurer and if they can see that you are driving safely, they will automatically reduce your premium every month. This type of insurance has been said to reduce insurance prices by as much as £200 per year and you can read more about it here.
