The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is completely free via the NHS and entitles you to state provided healthcare equivalent to local’s access when travelling throughout the European Economic Area and Switzerland. This isn’t a suitable replacement for travel insurance however as it would not cover any private medical costs, such as being flown back to the UK or lost and stolen belongings.
